Before, there are only a few Mexican restaurants to choose from. Now, we have more choices and one of which is Agave Mexican Cantina. Agave Mexican Cantina have been around for two years with its first branch at Eastwood. Then, they’ve expanded with additional two branches, one is Shangri-La Mall and one in SM North EDSA’s SkyGarden.
For our appetizer, we had Nacho Grande and Queso Fundido. Their nachos are made of fresh corn chips that were made straight from their kitchen. Toppings included are: mexican cheese, sour cream, pico de gallo, guacamole, jalapenos, re-fried beans, and taco beef. You can also choose grilled Jalapeno chicken if you like to experiment since the usual nacho toppings would include beef. Nachos are meant for sharing. Thus, if you’ll be having lunch or dinner, it’s better that you go with 3 to 5 friends so that you won’t be too full after eating this appetizer.
Queso Fundido is a Mexican cheese dip with bits of chorizo, spinach and artichokes. It is served with garlic bread, tortilla triangles and corn chips. Like the previously mentioned appetizer, this is also meant for sharing. However, this one is a lighter appetizer.
Their quesadillas can either be good for one person or it can be for sharing. Other options are aside from chicken are: cheese, steak, and crab and shrimp. The tortilla used was a bit dry and the cheese that was used is not good as well. Although the sidings such as sour cream, guacamole and pico de gallo.
If you’re a first-timer at Agave Mexican Cantina, you must try their Chimichangas (fried burrito). The steak was very tender and tasty. In addition, it is packed with fillings such as Mexican red rice, pico de gallo, lettuce and cheese.
What I like about their Chicken and Steak Fajitas is that the chicken is juicy and their steak is tender. Other variants of fajitas to choose from are: vegetables, chicken, shrimp, steak, chicken and shrimp, and steak and shrimp.
One thing that I liked about Agave is the Yucatan Mexican Skewers. The steak, again, is very tender and tasty. It has a different marinade compared from what they used in the chimichangas or in the Fajitas. I love the taste of lime in the steak, which is very distinct. The skewers were not overcooked, they were very juicy.
Finally for dessert, we have the Fried Ice Cream and the Boca Negra. It was actually a long time since I have eaten Fried Ice Cream. It reminded me of the one I ate in Streetlife in Makati during the 90’s. Maybe you’d be wondering if it’s possible to fry the ice cream well, it just creates the illusion that it was fried – the vanilla ice cream is dipped in corn flakes. It is really good, you must try this.
On the other hand, Boca Negra is popularly known as the chocolate lava cake. It’s chocolate cake with molten milk chocolate at the center. I loved how the molten milk chocolate oozes out of the cake. Yum!
Comparing their prices to the other Mexican restaurants, it might be too pricey but when you taste the delicious dishes that we’ve tasted above, it’s justifiable. This is our second time to be there and we’re glad to have gone to this food tasting because our first visit there is not that good. We had the chicken enchiladas (double) before and actually enjoyed the taste though we feel that the price which was unreasonable. The price was 290 pesos and it seemed that it’s only meant for one person. I just don’t know if it already changed. So basically, Agave has redeemed itself to us foodies with the other dishes that we have tried.
By the way, Agave is celebrating its 2nd year anniversary and with that, they have the 2 peso margaritas for every 150 pesos meal purchase. Imagine how cheap that is??! This promo is available only at Agave Eastwood on August 22 (11 am) to August 23 (3 am). So better bring your drinking buddies and avail of this promo.
